We can all have our say about the environment, but the voices that can’t be heard directly are those of nature itself, all the animals and plants that we share the planet with. Poetry is a way to lend them our voices, to look at the world through very different eyes and write what we see. Poet Jennie Osborne will share poems that do this, and support us in writing our own poems for nature, in the session and after.
Jennie lives in South Devon on the edge of Dartmoor, with her husband, poet and musician Steve Day. She is an occasional Poetry School tutor and was for many years one of the Teignmouth Poetry Festival organisers. In 2024 she has published a pamphlet, Reconstructing a Brother, with Wylde Publications, which follows both the life of her brother, an enigmatic figure, and her own journey in exploring it. Her latest full collection, Signals From the Other, published by Dempsey and Windle, explores our relationship with the other-than-human; animals, as individuals and species, plants and the whole planetary ecosystem, as well as our perception of the ‘something beyond’ that we call spiritual. The imminent climate and environmental catastrophe is present, explicitly or as a silent backdrop, in all these poems.
This workshop is part of the Bovey Tracey Great Big Green Week (7-15 June), the UK’s biggest celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature. During the week, communities across the country will together be a wave of support for action to protect the planet. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to support the future work of Bovey Tracey's Great Big Green Week.
We invite you to join Jennie Osborne and three other eco-poets for the poetry reading on Wednesday, 11 June, from 7-9pm at First Draft Books. Look at our Events calendar for details.
Tickets are non-transferable and non-fundable.
