About the Class!
Sashiko is a Japanese stitching technique that was historically used to mend, reinforce, and embellish garments. Traditionally it was often a simple running stitch using white thread on indigo-dyed fabric. Over time, Sashiko has evolved into a decorative stitching style using colored threads and a variety of geometric patterns. This is a beginner-friendly class, and all supplies needed in class will be provided.
We'll cover the history of Sashiko while also learning to stitch a basic Sashiko pattern. Students will leave class with a stitched piece of fabric suitable for framing or for finishing into a coaster. We will also learn how to stencil a Sashiko pattern onto a piece of cotton fabric. Students will then be able to take this stenciled piece of fabric home to continue their stitching practice with included needle and thread.
