Prioritize Breastfeeding
World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated the first week of August, though Canada/Nationally celebrates first week of October so we can explore and discuss the theme of Prioritizing Breastfeeding this month.
This year’s theme, Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems, recognizes the barriers that breastfeeding mothers face – inadequate support, misinformation and systemic challenges that include a lack of paid time off from work to breastfeed, of parental leave after the baby is born, and inadequate protection from marketing of breastmilk substitutes – and calls on the government, the health system, workplaces and communities to build enduring, equitable frameworks that support breastfeeding mothers and empower families.
La Leche League Canada and the Newmarket group are here to support, provide information and connect parents. We would love to be apart of your support system.
All expectant a new parents interested in breastfeeding, chestfeeding or human milk feeding are welcome to attend monthly Group meetings. Anytime is a good time to come to a La Leche League meeting; when pregnant, with a new baby or when considering weaning.
While a series of four meetings with the following topics is rotated throughout the year, the specific content varies significantly depending on the current focus and the needs of those present
Meeting 1: The Advantages of Breastfeeding to Mother and Baby
Meeting 2: Baby Arrives: The Family and the Breastfed Baby
Meeting 3: The Art of Breastfeeding and Avoiding Difficulties
4. Nutrition and Weaning
