Nat Adderley Jr. is an accomplished pianist, composer, arranger, and producer, known for his contributions to jazz, R&B, and pop music. Born on May 23, 1955, in Quincy, Florida, he comes from a celebrated jazz family—his father, Nat Adderley Sr., was a renowned cornetist, and his uncle, Cannonball Adderley, was a legendary saxophonist2.
Adderley Jr. began playing piano at a young age and had his first composition recorded by his uncle when he was just 11 years old. He attended Yale University, where he earned a degree in African American studies. He is perhaps best known for his long-standing collaboration with Luther Vandross, serving as Vandross's musical director and arranger for many years. He contributed to iconic tracks like "Never Too Much," "Superstar," and "Here and Now," among others.
In addition to his work with Vandross, Adderley Jr. has arranged and produced music for artists like Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, and the Temptations. He has also returned to his jazz roots, performing with his quartet and trio at venues worldwide. His influences include Chick Corea, Thelonious Monk, and John Coltrane.
Nat Adderley Jr.'s career reflects his versatility and deep connection to music across genres.
