Play Club is like a book club, but for plays! Whether you are familiar with the art of reading plays, or looking to expand your appreciation for dramatic literature, this book club is an opportunity to read plays you have been meaning to explore or have never considered reading before. Learn about new works, discover new playwrights, and make friends!
This group will read one playscript from the Library for the Performing Arts circulating collection every month, and then come together to discuss the work. We will read one scene from the play together and discuss the text in a book club discussion format.
This program will take place in person at the Library for the Performing Arts Harvey Fierstein Theatre Lab. If you would like to participate in .
This program is intended for adult patrons.

Hir tells the story of Isaac, recently returned home from the wars after being discharged from the Marines under suspicious circumstances, only to find the life he remembers upended. Isaac's father, who once ruled the family with an iron fist, has had a debilitating stroke; his younger sister, Maxine, is now his brother, Max; and their mother, Paige, is committed to revolution at any cost. Determined to be free of any responsibility toward her formerly abusive husband—or the home he created—Paige fervently believes she can lead the way to a ”new world order.”
Taylor Mac is a playwright, actor, singer-songwriter, performance artist, director and producer. Mac is the author of seventeen full-length plays and performance pieces including Hir (placed on the top ten theater of 2015 lists of The New York Times, New York Magazine, and Time Out NY; published by North Western University Press and in American Theater Magazine), The Lily’s Revenge (Obie Award), The Walk Across America for Mother Earth (named One of the Best Plays of 2011 by The New York Times), and in collaboration with Mandy Patinkin, Susan Stroman and Paul Ford, Mac created The Last Two People on Earth: An Apocalyptic Vaudeville.
