An influential figure in new jazz for over four decades, multi-instrumentalist and composer Peter Apfelbaum - called "a visionary, galvanic composer like few others of his time" by CMJ New Music Report - brings his longstanding, genre-mashing big band, New York Hieroglyphics, back to Nublu for a rare NYC appearance. Formed in 1977 with fellow Berkeley High School classmates, the original Hieroglyphics Ensemble began to attract international attention in the 1980's for its unique fusing of elements of world music with the aesthetics of the jazz avant-garde; members over the next three decades would include a long list of notable BHS alumni including Steven Bernstein, Benny Green, Craig Handy, Joshua Redman and Ambrose Akinmusire.

Championed by the late trumpeter Don Cherry (who appeared with the band throughout the late 80's and early 90's and recorded the group on his album "Multikulti") and the Grateful Dead (who recognized Apfelbaum in 1991 with its Rex Foundation Ralph J. Gleason Award for Creative Excellence and invited the Hieroglyphics to open several of their shows during this period), the group has remained Apfelbaum's primary vehicle for composing throughout his career. After moving to NYC in 1998, Apfelbaum formed the current version of the band, the New York Hieroglyphics, with several original members who'd also moved east plus a handful of more recent associates from New York's downtown scene. Their last album, "It Is Written", was heralded by London's Jazzwise as "The triumphant return of one of the most original bands in American jazz today", while JazzTimes called it "Positively fire-spitting... it is the flowering complexity of Apfelbaum's pen that make this one of the finest discs of the year."

For this show, Apfelbaum - who has also written for Kronos Quartet, Harry Belafonte, Don Cherry, Bill Laswell, Kamikaze Ground Crew and Trey Anastasio - will be premiering new music as well as performing selections from throughout the Hieroglyphics' 48-year history.
