Existential crises are like a persistent rash. There's no cure, but if you're suffering from the Big Questions, maybe the How To Be Book Club can be a salve. Come hang out in Book Club Bar's back garden one Saturday each month, and join us in discussing works of philosophical fiction from across different eras and parts of the globe. We'll read the book beforehand (and do us a solid, if you can—get your book from our store), and then gather for casual conversation over drinks. No preparation needed; just bring your book and your curious mind!
This July, after a couple months of reading philosophy from antiquity, we'll pivot to the super-modern quandry of Artificial Intelligence. We'll be reading Search History by Eugene Lim, paired with Searches: Selfhood in the Digital Age by Vauhini Vara. The advent of AI has potentially catastrophic implications for many spheres of life: labor and job displacement; privacy, cybersecurity, and surveillance; and misinformation and deepfakes (not to mention the worst-case Singularity) to name a few. These books address the more personal and existential questions around AI: how is it beginning to mediate our experience of the world? How is it impacting our relationships and our connections with strangers? Is it already too late to make ourselves indispensable?
This month's picks: by Eugene Lim
& by Vauhini Vara.
