Champions is a very funny, very important film about enabling intellectually disabled adults. A must see! Gandhi: “The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members.”

“Maybe you like a night out on the town
To watch some hippie freak act like a clown
Maybe you think it would be just groovy
To hang out with your friends and watch a movie
Oh guys and girls
In that case come down to The Hub
Because Movie Night's an open club
Your Hosts are on The Golden Road
To Unlimited Devotion
To pics in rapid motion ”
Bobby Farrelly's “Champions” from 2023 continues his tradition of films about inclusion. It stars Woody Harrelson as Marcus Marakovich, an arrogant, difficult, assistant basketball coach for the Des Moines' J League Team, the Iowa Stallions. After a rough week, he finds himself coaching The Friends, Des Moines' Special Olympics Basketball Team (all of whom are all played by intellectually disabled adults). One of the Friends, Johnny (Kevin Iannucci), has a sister Alex (Kaitlin Olson), who takes the team to away games in her RV. Their home gymnasium is supervised by Julio (Cheech Marin). This great movie was overlooked by all of the major awards organizations. However, the Humanitas Prize, which honors film & TV writers who promote human dignity, nominated screenplay writer Mark Rizzo for Best Comedy Feature Film.
Cindy & I are presenting Champions at The Hub on Canal on Friday 6/20. Movie Night at The Hub is the most eclectic, entertaining, pedagogical & economic show in town. Admission is $10, and includes a chocolate, the film, a free raffle, a dinner buffet, and audience participation in the Post-Film Discussion. Beer, wine & water are available for purchase.
This show will mark our 8th anniversary of film presentation at The Hub with nary a skipped month but for April & May 2020, when the building was closed for COVID. I remember that first show, Jaws on 6/28/17: Fraught by the surreal performance art unfolding before him, our then Fearless Leader, Richard England, turned to Cindy and asked, “Where did you get this guy?".
