This Teens Improv Intensive is a fast-paced crash course for young people aged 13 to 18 who want to learn improvisational skills to level up their impact in drama. Over 3 days, using a fast-moving mix of exercises, games, and scene work, teens build creative confidence, sharpen communication, and discover the joy of thinking on their feet.
Designed for all ability levels, we create a supportive environment that helps participants grow both onstage and in everyday life. Teens will learn to trust their ideas, collaborate with others, and embrace spontaneity, all in a space where they can express themselves freely and confidently.
The week also includes an optional Thursday afternoon showcase, giving students a chance to share what they’ve learned with family and friends.
The classes are run by Phill Spear, a dedicated teacher, youth worker, and improviser with a background in positive psychology. Phill founded Improv Taranaki, has performed at national and international festivals and trained extensively in Aotearoa and abroad. His classes and teaching practice blend improv, clowning, and acting with a strong focus on creativity, connection, resilience, and personal growth.
We invite play in improv and do it within a structure of games and exercises that contain restrictions which then allow creativity to flow. This framework requires the ability to actively listen to the facilitators instructions and follow through. To thrive in this environment, participants should:
Be able to listen to & follow basic instructions
Work independently for short periods
Have an interest in drama and/or improv
With the support of the New Plymouth District Creative Communities Scheme.
