Blending folk fingerpicking with bluegrass flatpicking, he carved out a sound that’s both grounded and completely his own.
For over two decades, he’s been the rhythmic backbone of 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐢𝐥, the Grammy-winning band he shares with his brother, Cajun fiddle icon 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐃𝐨𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐭.
And his 1991 solo debut, 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐉’𝐚𝐢 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢, proved he’s just as strong out front as he is holding it down.
His guitar journey started by accident — literally.
After breaking his arm during high school football, he picked up a guitar to pass the time.
Dylan and Paul Simon got him started, but 𝐃𝐨𝐜 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐬𝐨𝐧 and 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞 lit the fire.
That mix of tradition and creativity still fuels his playing today.
🎶 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐡𝐥 made his way from Montana to New Orleans in the ’90s and became one of the city’s most trusted sidemen.
After a stint with the 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐲-𝐏𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧’ 𝐃𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬 during their 𝐙𝐨𝐨𝐭 𝐒𝐮𝐢𝐭 𝐑𝐢𝐨𝐭 run, he dropped anchor in the Crescent City and never looked back.
He’s backed up 𝐃𝐫. 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧, 𝐆𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧, 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧𝐧𝐲 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐞, 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐨𝐲𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐦𝐚, 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐤𝐢𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝, and more —
and even picked up a Big Easy Award with the Sansone–Krown–Fohl trio in 2004.
