ABOUT THE SHOW:
This dynamic adaptation by John Heimbuch reinvents Washington Irving’s iconic tale through a lens of storytelling, memory, and fear. Combining suspense, humor, and the supernatural, the play explores the tension between myth and reality in a small, haunted American village.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
ICHABOD CRANE – (Male, 20s-40s)
An outsider in the village of Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod is bookish, awkward, proud, and highly superstitious. He fancies himself a man of learning and refinement but is easily swayed by fear and local gossip. His ambition to marry Katrina is as much about social status and wealth as it is affection. Ichabod is both comic and tragic — a man undone by the very stories he consumes. His aspirations and fears guide his actions in Sleepy Hollow.
KATRINA VAN TASSEL – (Female, 20s-30s)
The only child of the wealthy Van Tassel family. Intelligent, independent, and self-aware, Katrina uses her charm and desirability to navigate and manipulate the attentions of Ichabod and Brom. While she is often portrayed as an object of affection, Heimbuch’s version gives her agency, subtle humor, and strategic intent.
ABRAHAM “BROM BONES” VAN BRUNT – (Male, 20s-40s)
The charismatic, brawny, and competitive local hero. Brom is a prankster with a loyal following in town. He’s confident to the point of arrogance and deeply protective of his status, especially in matters involving Katrina. While boisterous, he is clever, and his feud with Ichabod contains both menace and playfulness.
BALTUS VAN TASSEL / TOWNSPERSON – (Male-presenting, 40s-60s)
Katrina’s wealthy father. Jovial, generous, and deeply rooted in tradition. Doubles as other roles as needed.
MRS. VAN RIPPER / TOWNSPERSON – (Female-presenting, 40s-60s)
A practical, stern widow who hosts Ichabod during his stay in Sleepy Hollow. She offers a grounded counterpoint to the flightier or more superstitious characters. May double as other townspeople or storytellers.
GEOFFREY CRAYON / NARRATOR – (Any gender, 30s-60s)
A reflective storyteller who frames the tale, possibly representing the authorial voice. Diedrich guides the audience through the story, sometimes interacting with characters and sometimes observing. May be portrayed as sincere, skeptical, or ironic depending on interpretation. A storyteller with depth, charm, and ambiguity. (Flexible gender and age.)
ENSEMBLE / TOWNSPEOPLE / SPIRITS – (Any gender, all ages)
This adaptation makes extensive use of a flexible ensemble to play villagers, spirits, forest entities, partygoers, and more. Ensemble members serve as the living pulse of Sleepy Hollow and help transition between reality and legend. Ideal for actors with strong physicality, movement skills, and a collaborative spirit. Some ensemble roles may take on lines, character moments, or voice work (e.g., the Headless Horseman’s presence).
NOTES:
All roles are open to actors of any ethnicity, race, and background.
Actors may be cast in multiple roles.
Movement and ensemble storytelling are key to this production.
