Birds Queensland Monthly Meeting with Guest Speakers:

*Richard Noske – Pheasants, cranes and real babblers: birding Southeast China in winter

Penn’s talk will examine the challenges faced by the beach-nesting White-fronted Plover (Charadrius marginatus) in an urbanising environment in Cape Town, South Africa, and similarities with equivalent Australian birds such as Red-capped and Hooded Plovers

Richard will tell us about his birding trip to Southeast China with three other fanatical birders. Their primary targets were pheasants, including the fabulous Reeve’s Pheasant, with the longest tail found in the family, and Cabot’s Tragopan, the only yellow tragopan. At Poyang Lake they were privileged to see at least 50% of the world’s population of the critically endangered Siberian Crane on its wintering grounds. In the karst tower-dotted landscape of Guangxi, a limestone’s throw away from North Vietnam, they observed one of the most recently (2008) discovered bird species – the black Nonggang Babbler. Their final destination was Hainan, a large island south of the mainland, home to two endemic pheasants.
