Open Apiary times are an informal unstructured gathering of members of the Great Plains Master Beekeeping program at the UNL Bee Lab research apiary at the Kimmel Orchard and Vineyard teaching apiary located in Nebraska City, Nebraska. There will be brief demonstrations, questions and answers, and time to get hands on experience with beehives.
*Cost: Great Plains Master Beekeeping members: FREE.

*Open Apiary times will be the thirdThursday of the month from 5:30-6:30PM unless otherwise stated.
Open Apiary will count as an hour of field training towards your progress through the Great Plains Master Beekeeping program.
***Please bring closed toed shoes and outdoor wear. Please bring your own bee suits but not your own hive tools please. We can provide bee suits if you do not have them; let us know your approximate shirt size when you register so we bring the correct fit for you.
2025 Schedule:
June 19 – Conduct health inspections, add honey supers if needed, manage small hive beetles and wax moths, and address pest pressure.
July 17 – Continue health inspections, check queen’s status, prevent robbing behavior, and protect colonies during honey production.
August 21 – Perform health inspections and varroa checks, manage fall feeding, and prepare colonies for winter.
September 18 – Conduct health inspections, remove honey supers, reduce hive entrances for winter, and plan for fall flow and pollinators.
