"The main purpose of a Drum Circle in my humble opinion is to join together in an effort to raise vibrations of peace, love, and harmony."
Djununba is a West African style of drumming and Dancing where each type of drum represents an ancestral or spiritual deity and the ensemble becomes a living altar to which dancers bring their dance as both offerings, prayers and movement and energy itself becomes a gift to feed the drummers and the collective.
This is for all ages and skill levels and we encourage dancers to join as well as drums and percussion.
From 6-7 Baba Teddy will do an interactive blessing of the drums as well as answer questions on drum circles, African drumming and things no one generally tells you when you enter a drum circle.
From 7-9 we will be doing Dununba, a Yoruba, igbo and Hausa style of drum and dance. Again, it is for all ages and skill levels and there will be no complicated moves or rhythms to learn it is an organic and joyous form of drumming.
Baba Teddy (Ted Jauw) is a Konchante of Gineh Yoruba VoDou and an Oluwo of Yoruba Odu/Ifa. His teacher is Babatunde Olatunji who is most known as the teacher of Mickey Hart, Carlos Santana and John Coltrane who recorded his last album at the Olatunji Center in Harlem.
Ted is a trained Drum Circle facilitator in Hull Method as well as Gordy Ryan who was Olatunji's lead drummer for 30 years.
These days, he is more interested in bringing West African styles of drum, dance and spiritual ritual.
Open to members of Witches of West Michigan, their guests, and interested community members.
