How do you live queer love in a state of emergency? Ukraine is not just a country that is fighting for its survival. Ukraine is also home to people who have been fighting for acceptance, equal rights and visibility for decades. An evening of short films about queer life in Ukraine.
Lesbians, gays, bi, trans*, inter* and queers have never had it easy in Ukraine. Although homosexuality has no longer been a criminal offence since the country gained independence in 1991, the population’s hostile attitude has remained.
This only changed with the start of the Pride movement in 2012, which Munich helped to support as Kyiv’s twin city: the new visibility brought acceptance, and the rapprochement with the EU also helped to push some legal progress. The problem to this day is the few, but loud right-wing extremists who see their existence threatened in an increasingly liberalised society. Queer people are their core ennemies.
As a minority, LGBTIQ* are still in particular need of protection due to experiences of discrimination in a society that is still relatively homophobic and trans-hostile – this is especially true for a country at war. Discrimination and violence are part of everyday life.
It is these people that we want to make visible as part of our short film night on the occasion of IDAHOBIT on Sunday, 18 May, 7.30 pm at Sub.
Christina Parficheva, the curator of the evening and member of Munich Kyiv Queer, presents a selection of queer short films made between 2017 and 2024. These are documentary films and fiction formats that have been shown at various festivals such as Sunny Bunny in Kyiv, the Queer Film Festival Munich and the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival. Sometimes raw and poetic, always honest and empathetic, they tell of longing, fear, resistance and hope.
We show all the films in original voice with German or English subtitles. Afterwards, guests are invited to a discussion with the filmmakers. Veronika Havrykova (“Lost”), Olena Siyatovska (“I am Michelle”) and Bohdan Kolesnyk (“Apokalypse Yesterday”) will be there. They all live abroad: Veronika in Munich, Olena is travelling from Lisbon, Bohdan from Warsaw. We speak German and English.

QUEER FIGHTERS OF UKRAINE Ukraine, 2023. Dir.: Alex King, Angelika Ustymenko. 20 min
The documentary provides an intimate insight into Russia’s war against Ukraine from the perspective of the Ukrainian community, who are simultaneously fighting against the Russian invasion and for equality in their own country. On the first anniversary of the large-scale invasion, Ustymenko, in collaboration with Huck Docs, resumed an earlier documentary film project to collect the reflections of queer soldiers after a year of war and explore the diverse forms of queer resistance.
I AM MICHELLE Ukraine, 2023, English subtitles. Director: Olena Siyatovska. 20 min
Michelle, a 20-year-old trans* girl, lives in Kyiv and dreams of becoming a model. Although she is popular on social media, she is often overcome by loneliness. She returns to her home village in Western Ukraine to visit relatives and friends. It is the first time she is accepted for who she is.
SIMEIZ Ukraine, 2022. English subtitles. Director: Anton Shebetko. 18 min
A village on the southern coast of the Crimean peninsula. During the Soviet era, a small queer resort was secretly built here. It all began with a nudist beach. Later, in independent Ukraine, the Hedgehogs nightclub was added. In the 1990s, Simeiz became an important meeting place for LGBTIQ* people from Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. Around 4,000 people visited the place every year. Today, under occupation, Simeiz is under threat. The state persecution of queer people in Russia leaves no room for diversity.
CHACHO Ukraine, 2020. German subtitles. Director: Vitalii Havura. 20 min
Yanush comes from the Roma community. He grew up in a small Ukrainian town and is due to get married soon. Just like his parents want him to. But Yanush is gay and in love with Pasha. Together they decide to secretly run away from the wedding and leave the town. But will Yanush really go through with it?
LOST Germany/Ukraine, 2024; German subtitles. Director: Veronika Havrykova. 17 min
After a painful break-up, the film’s main character flees to Germany to escape her memories. She gets into a taxi. During the journey, she gradually reveals her story: her girlfriend left her because the social pressure on the couple was obviously too high. Our protagonist struggles to accept this truth for herself. The conversation also makes the taxi driver think. At the end of the journey, they both find out something important for themselves. But will they have the courage to change their lives?
APOKALYPSE YESTERDAY Ukraine, 2023, Engl. subtitles. Director: Bohdan Kolesnyk. 18 min
The temperature of the Sun is rising mercilessly. In a few hours, the Earth and its inhabitants will disappear in the fires of hell. But there are those who will survive, flying in spaceships to another galaxy. Among these lucky ones are Bodia and his boyfriend Max. At least, that’s what Bodia thinks. Max has completely different plans. He dumps Bodia, stealing tickets to a rescue spaceship for himself and his new boyfriend Vasya. Bodia is preparing to face death alone, until his friend Sasha shows up. She’s serious about kicking Max’s ass, getting the stolen tickets back, and mending her friend’s broken heart. But the friends don’t have much time for that.

Wie lebt man queere Liebe im Ausnahmezustand? Die Ukraine ist nicht nur ein Land, das um sein Überleben kämpft. Die Ukraine ist auch Heimat von Menschen, die seit Jahrzehnten um Akzeptanz, gleiche Rechte und Sichtbarkeit ringen. Ein Abend mit Kurzfilmen über queeres Leben in der Ukraine.
Lesben, Schwule, Bi, Trans*, Inter* und Queers hatten es in der Ukraine nie leicht. Seit der Unabhängigkeit des Landes 1991 ist Homosexualität zwar nicht mehr strafbar; die ablehnende Haltung der Bevölkerung aber blieb.
Erst mit Beginn der Pride-Bewegung 2012, die München als Partnerstadt von Kyjiw mit seiner Community mit anstieß, änderte sich das: Die neue Sichtbarkeit brachte Akzeptanz, die Annäherung an die EU auch einige rechtliche Fortschritte. Das Problem sind bis heute die wenigen lautstarken Rechtsradikalen, die in einer liberaler werdenden Gesellschaft ihre Existenz bedroht sehen und entsprechend aggressiv gegen alles Queere auftreten.
LGBTIQ* sind als Minderheit aufgrund von Diskriminierungserfahrungen in einer noch immer relativ homo- und transfeindlichen Gesellschaft bis heute besonders schutzbedürftig – das gilt insbesondere für ein Land im Krieg. Diskriminierung und Gewalt gehören zum Alltag.
Es sind diese Menschen, die wir im Rahmen unserer Kurzfilmnacht aus Anlass des IDAHOBIT am Sonntag, 18. Mai, ab 19.30 Uhr im Sub sichtbar machen wollen.
Christina Parficheva, die Kuratorin des Abends und Mitfrau von Munich Kyiv Queer, präsentiert eine Auswahl queerer Kurzfilme, die zwischen 2017 und 2024 entstanden sind. Es sind Dokumentarfilme und Fiction-Formate, die auf verschiedenen Festivals gezeigt wurden wie dem Queer Film Festival München, Sunny Bunny in Kyjiw und dem Thessaloniki Documentary Festival. Mal rauh und poetisch, immer ehrlich und einfühlsam erzählen sie von Sehnsucht, Angst, Widerstand und Hoffnung.
Wir zeigen die Filme im Original mit deutschen oder englischen Untertiteln. Im Anschluss sind die Gäste im Sub zur Diskussion mit den Filmschaffenden geladen. Es kommen Veronika Havrykova („Lost“), Olena Siyatovska („I am Michelle“) und Bohdan Kolesnyk („Apokalypse Yesterday“). Sie alle leben im Ausland: Veronika in München, Olena reist aus Lissabon an, Bohdan aus Warschau. Wir sprechen deutsch und englisch.

Як жити квір-любов’ю в умовах надзвичайного стану? Україна – це не просто країна, яка бореться за своє виживання. Україна також є домом для людей, які десятиліттями борються за прийняття, рівні права та видимість. Вечір короткометражних фільмів про квір-життя в Україні.
Лесбійкам, геям, бі, транс*, інтер* та квір ніколи не було легко в Україні. Хоча гомосексуальність більше не є кримінальним злочином після здобуття країною незалежності в 1991 році, вороже ставлення населення залишилося.
Ситуація змінилася лише з початком руху “Прайд” у 2012 році, який Мюнхен, як місто-побратим Києва, допоміг ініціювати разом зі своєю громадою: нова видимість принесла визнання, а зближення з ЄС – і певний правовий прогрес. Проблемою донині залишаються нечисленні праворадикали, які вбачають загрозу своєму існуванню у все більш лібералізованому суспільстві і, відповідно, агресивно налаштовані проти всього квір-спільноти.
Будучи меншиною, ЛГБТІК* все ще особливо потребують захисту через досвід дискримінації в суспільстві, яке все ще залишається відносно гомофобним і транс-ворожим – це особливо актуально для країни, що перебуває у стані війни. Дискримінація та насильство є частиною повсякденного життя.
Саме цих людей ми хочемо зробити видимими в рамках нашого вечора короткометражного кіно з нагоди IDAHOBIT у неділю, 18 травня, з 19.30 в Sub.
Кристина Парфічева, кураторка заходу, представить добірку квір-короткометражних фільмів, знятих між 2017 та 2024 роками. Це документальні та ігрові стрічки, які були показані на різних фестивалях, зокрема на квір кінофестивалі QFFM в Мюнхені, Sunny Bunny в Києві та Салонікському фестивалі документального кіно. Іноді сирі та поетичні, але завжди чесні та співчутливі, вони розповідають про тугу, страх, опір та надію.
Ми показуємо фільми в оригіналі з німецькими або англійськими субтитрами. Опісля гості запрошуються на дискусію з режисерами у Sub. Там будуть Вероніка Гаврикова (“Lost”), Олена Сіятовська (“Я – Мішель”) та Богдан Колесник (“Апокаліпсис вчора”). Всі вони живуть за кордоном: Вероніка в Мюнхені, Олена їде з Лісабона, Богдан з Варшави. Ми розмовляємо німецькою та англійською.
