ROAD TO THE NORTH follows Mackay-based journalist Fergus Gregg as he journeys through northern Japan, retracing the historic paths of poet Matsuo Basho, the master of Haiku. The travel documentary immerses viewers in breathtaking rural landscapes, where Fergus meets winter huntsmen preserving ancient traditions and participates in the Nebuta Matsuri, Aomori’s largest summer festival. This unique celebration of northern culture sees Fergus marching alongside locals in a vibrant display of heritage and community.

A collaboration between Fergus, Brisbane-born director Jason English, and Japanese partners Yuko and Hana, the film offers a personal, in-depth exploration of Japan’s rich history and cultural tapestry. As Japan remains a favourite destination for Australian travellers, ROAD TO THE NORTH provides fresh, immersive insights into the country’s northern regions.
