Lecture: Twelve Artworks Everyone Should Know, with Nicole Derenne

Who decides what makes art great? In this lecture, Derenne will discuss connoisseurship, which is the practice of someone with expertise in the history, techniques, and principles of the fine arts in determining quality. She will examine the influence of connoisseurship on the discipline of art history and the identification of great art. She will also be a connoisseur by presenting twelve artworks everyone should know, inviting the audience to join the conversation.

The evening will begin with a reception and refreshments with Ms. Derenne's lecture to follow at 6:30. Free and open to the public.

About the Lecturer:
Nicole Derenne is a Teaching Associate Professor at the Department of Art and Design at the University of North Dakota. Derenne teaches art history, including introductory visual and fine arts appreciation and art history survey courses. She also teaches advanced art history courses, such as feminist art history, contemporary art, and art of specific genres and historical periods. Derenne received a Master of Arts in Art History degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of North Dakota. She will receive a Doctor of Education in Educational Practice and Leadership from the University of North Dakota in May 2025.
