Every Container Counts!
Are you ready to put your detection team to the test in a truly skill-focused event?
Welcome to the Can-Do Challenge: Single Blind Edition, an 18-container search designed to challenge your detection skills in a controlled, structured environment. Every container has something, but not all are what you SEEK!
Unlike Double-blind searches, which are the gold standard in detection, because when nobody knows the answer, there’s no way to help, hint, or cue the team, even by accident. It’s just you, your dog, and the truth. No one in the search area knows the hide. You don’t know. The observer doesn’t know. Only the dog knows.
And that’s the point.
This time around we’ll be going Single Blind.
What is Single Blind, and Why Use It?
In a single-blind search, the handler does not know where the hides are, but the observer or judge does. This format allows for controlled observation, feedback, and detailed scoring.
But single-blind searches also come with risk:
Unintentional handler cues, eye movements, body positioning, voice tone, can influence the dog, especially when the handler starts guessing. That’s why this format is both a learning opportunity and a discipline check.
The goal? To assess your ability to read your dog and ignore assumptions.
The Setup: You’ll receive the following briefing:
“You’re about to run a single-blind search. This event will be recorded. You’ll have 5 minutes to work 18 containers. All but one container has something inside. I will know the hide locations, and will confirm your calls, on the score sheet. Call each find by saying "Alert number 3" or similar. I will NOT respond "Yes" or "No." You will continue until you call “Finish” or time runs out. No penalty for timing out, and no bonus for finishing quickly.”
This format provides NO real-time call verification, giving you confidence in your dog’s performance while still testing your ability to stay honest and focused.
The Challenge:
18 containers
Each has something: odor, food, toys, or nothing
Only the observer knows where the hides are
You call alerts and keep going, confirmation comes at the end of the search.
5-minute time limit
Scoring:
Correct Alerts: +1 point
Unproductive Indications: -1 point each
Bonus: +2 points if you correctly identify (but do not call) the blank container
Top Score = Prize + Bragging Rights
Requirements:
Dogs must already be working odor confidently
Crating in vehicles only, no indoor crating
NACSW Parking Lot Rules apply
Dog-reactive teams: Please notify us in advance and use red bandanna system
Odors Used: Birch, Anise, Clove (Cypress on request)
Each team gets 5 minutes to search
All teams will run their search. At the end of each session there will be a discussion and Q&A with coaching tips. There will also be an end of day wrap up discussion and Q&A.
