Simon Angell (CA)

I have been immersed in the professional music circuit for nearly 30 years, performing, recording, and touring as a guitarist for hire (and more recently alto saxophone) with a wide range of artists. Since finishing jazz studies at 19 in my native city of Montréal, Canada,
I have been on the road and in the studio with musicians spanning multiple genres, including Patrick Watson, Matt Holubowski, Antoine Corriveau, Julien Sagot (ex-Karkwa), Marie-Jo Thério, Amon Tobin and Ramachandra Borcar (Ramasutra), to name only a few. Beyond my collaborations, I co-lead the experimental post-rock band Thus Owls with my wife, Swedish singer and Constellation Records recording artist Erika Angell. Touring has been an integral part of my artistic life, taking me across continents and stages of all sizes. As a key member of Patrick Watson and the Wooden Arms from 2005 to 2012, I toured extensively worldwide, from Quebec to Singapore and beyond. Our album Close to Paradise won the Polaris Prize in 2007, and we performed at landmark events such as the "Grand Événement" at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal in 2009 and a special collaboration with the famed Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam in 2011. During this period, my playing and experimental approach to the guitar garnered attention, including a feature in Guitar Player magazine (October 2009 issue).Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of sharing the stage with some of the most revered musicians and producers of our time, including Steve Reich, Philip Glass, John Cale (Velvet Underground), and even the Godfatherof Soul himself, James Brown. My recording journey has also led me to work with Grammy-winning producer Tony Black (Alicia Keys). A turning point in my artistic exploration came through my encounters with guitarist Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, John Zorn), who opened my ears to uncharted sonic landscapes. This, along with my own relentless experimentation on guitar and compositionally—has helped me carve out a distinct and personal sound. More recently, I have ventured more into film score composing, having composed scores for The Seas Between Us (Marlene Edoyan) and Woman In Car (Vanya Rose, starring Helene Joy) with Thus Owls, which we were nominated for Best Original Song at the Canadian Screen Awards in 2022.
