• Samantha Sutherland - slip away • (15 minutes)
Peu de gens parlent couramment le ktunaxa. slip away, un solo de danse contemporaine créé et interprété par Samantha Sutherland, explore les sentiments de deuil et d’espoir qui émergent face à la disparition de cette langue. Cette pièce est une affaire de famille. Son frère a composé la musique pour guitare électrique. Sa mère a brodé le costume. Et des enregistrements de conversations avec sa grand-mère forment la trame de fond. Qu’arrive-t-il quand les gens sont poussés par la peur? Comment faire naître l’espoir? slip away présente les efforts actuels pour protéger le ktunaxa et envisage un futur où cette langue prospère.
Few are fluent speakers of Ktunaxa. slip away, a contemporary dance solo created and performed by Samantha Sutherland, explores themes of loss and hope relating to the endangered state of this language. It is a family affair. Her brother composed music for electric guitar. Her mother stitched the fabric for the costume. And recordings of conversations with her grandmother underlie the piece. What happens when individuals are motivated by fear? What work needs to happen to develop a sense of hope? slip away shares accounts of the current efforts to preserve Ktunaxa and dreams of how it may continue enlivened in the future.
• Charo Foo Tai Wei - Yearning • (35 minutes)
En tant qu'immigrée asiatique ayant vécu le sexisme, le racisme et la violence domestique, Charo Foo Tai Wei doit constamment faire face à différents enjeux sociétaux. Elle excelle dans l’art de prétendre que cela glisse sur elle comme de l’eau sur le dos d’un canard. En même temps, elle rêve d’un endroit où elle se sentirait ancrée, chez elle. Yearning magnifie les batailles intérieures de Charo tandis qu'elle creuse son chemin vers la lumière telle une plante. Ce solo de danse contemporaine invite également les spectateur·rices à examiner leurs propres blessures intérieures qui ont besoin de guérison.
As an Asian immigrant who has experienced sexism, racism and domestic violence, Charo Foo Tai Wei must constantly deal with societal challenges. She has mastered the art of pretending it’s like water off a duck’s back. Yet she also dreams of finding a place she can take root in and call home. Yearning is a contemporary dance solo that magnifies Charo’s inner battles as, like a plant, she digs her way out toward the light. It invites audience members to explore the inner wounds they need to heal.
