Guitarist C Joynes (Cambridge, UK) and fiddler Mike Gangloff (Virginia, USA) are a trans-Atlantic duo celebrating the release of their new "Tom Winter, Tom Spring" album with a first-ever Canadian tour together.
Both have long musical histories -- Gangloff is a founding member of drone improv masters Pelt and old-time rowdies Black Twig Pickers; Joynes has released 10 albums that plunge from English folk tunes into solo work inspired by North and West African music.
"Tom Winter, Tom Spring" (VHF) emerged from the duo's UK tour in 2023, when Joynes and Gangloff spent a sunny afternoon recording in Sheffield's "Bishop's House," a 16th-century Tudor building whose stones, beams and plaster seemed to bring an extra heaviness to the proceedings. The combination of jaunty frolics (original and traditional), improvisation (of the longer- and shorter-form varieties), a touch of experimental tape magic (courtesy of a homemade reel-to-reel delay that Joynes was sometimes running his archtop through) -- plus just a bit of jaw harp, plucked by Gangloff on a couple songs -- appeared last year as a limited-edition 10-inch lathe cut on the Sonido Polifonico label. For the VHF release, it has become an LP, with Gangloff and Joynes each adding a solo live recording to the program.
"This duo sounds like a full band. The limited instrumental palate is used to exquisite effect, and the improvisation is inspired. " -- Dusted
"Seek 'Tom Winter, Tom Spring' out; with two of the most adept artists on the scene mid-way through a tour when this was cut, the music is fluid and confident, and they manage to balance dense intensity with lighter foot-tappers and spacious abstracts. It's quite a thing." -- KLOF
