Beyond the Darkness, You Can See the Stars, by acclaimed Italian artist Fiorenza Pancino, is a profound exploration of emotions and resilience. This captivating show features a collection of previously unseen works in three parts: “Fear”, “Vomiting”, and “Mantra", offering a unique glimpse into Pancino's creative journey, including pieces developed during her artist residency in Minneapolis last summer.
The central highlight of the exhibition is the inaugural presentation of Pancino's powerful participatory art project centered around the universal theme of “Fear.” This deeply engaging installation comprises 45 meticulously crafted bowls, envisioned as vessels of the soul, accompanied by 45 intimate interviews and 45 evocative drawings. Together, these elements weave a rich tapestry of personal experiences and shared vulnerabilities. Visitors will also have the opportunity to delve further into this project through a companion book, thoughtfully curated to present the interviews and corresponding images in a compelling side-by-side format.
Adding another layer of emotional depth to the exhibition are selections from Pancino's poignant and personal “Vomiting” series. These compelling works confront Pancino’s challenges with illness, inherited from her mother, exploring its profound impact on emotional regulation and the often debilitating experience of vomit-inducing migraines. Through her artistic lens, Pancino fearlessly navigates these difficult territories, offering a space for reflection and empathy.
Finally, "Beyond the darkness you can see the stars" will showcase a monumental 22-foot creation from Pancino’s ongoing “Mantra” series. This ambitious piece signifies a bold step in her artistic practice, incorporating innovative explorations in materials to convey the meditative and transformative power inherent in her “Mantra” works.
This exhibition promises to be an immersive and thought-provoking experience, inviting viewers to connect with the raw and honest expressions of human emotion that lie at the heart of Fiorenza Pancino's art.
Fiorenza Pancino, a native of the Veneto region in Italy, has established her artistic practice and life in Faenza for more than two decades. Her central passion lies in the realm of ceramics, a medium with which she feels a deep personal connection, drawing a parallel between her sensitivity to rapid temperature fluctuations and the inherent nature of clay. While ceramics form the core of her artistic expression, Pancino demonstrates a versatile approach by incorporating a range of other media into her creative explorations. These include the dynamic possibilities of video, the capturing gaze of photography, and the tactile qualities of diverse materials such as paper and fabric.
Pancino's recent artistic endeavors have taken her to international platforms, highlighting her growing recognition within the global ceramics community. She has participated in prestigious International Ceramic Residencies at the renowned Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute in China, a significant center for porcelain production, and Ceratekno in Toki, Japan, another region celebrated for its ceramic traditions. The year 2018 marked a considerable period of exhibitions for Pancino. She was invited to showcase her work at the esteemed European Ceramic Contest, held in Bornholm, Denmark —a prominent event in the European ceramic landscape. Her pieces were also featured at the Sogo Museum of Art in Yokohama, Japan, exposing her work to a Japanese audience, and at the Eunique Art Fair in Karlsruhe, Germany, a fair known for showcasing unique and high-quality art and design.
Earlier in her career, Pancino received an honourable mention at the International Gyeonggi Ceramic Biennale in Icheon, South Korea, in 2011, indicating early recognition of her artistic merit on an international scale. In 2013, she was selected to exhibit at Les Journées de la Céramique in Paris, a respected event dedicated to ceramics in the heart of France. In 2015, she was part of the "Ceramica Viva" group exhibition at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome, placing her work within a significant national art institution. 2017 proved to be an enriching year for Pancino. She was awarded the C. Casali jury prize at the 11th International Ceramic Competition in Mino, Japan, a highly regarded competition in the ceramics world. Additionally, she received 1st prize at Appignano Ceramica in Deruta, Umbria, Italy, further acknowledging her talent within her home country. That same year, she also held a solo exhibition at the Cantir Museum in Argentona, Spain, providing a dedicated space to showcase the breadth and depth of her artistic vision.
