On Friday morning, August 22, from 10:00 – 11:00am, “They Did it Their Way” continues with a Chautauqua of Helen J.W. Stewart, “First Lady of Las Vegas”, as portrayed by Kathy Pierson.
Called “the Matriarch of the Las Vegas Valley,” Helen J.W. Stewart proved to be a brave and capable rancher, businesswoman and matron of social and cultural affairs. Always a proponent of education, Stewart herself was a college graduate, a member of the Clark County School Board, and in 1916, she was elected to the state board of education. She also donated the land for the city’s first school building in 1922.
Kathy Pierson is a long-time volunteer of the Nevada State Museum in Carson City, a re-enactor of historic Nevada figures, and a student of Chautauqua.
