Rita was born in Abilene, Kansas and attended Kansas State University, Purdue University and Indiana University Medical Center. She has worked for many years in area hospitals as a dietician and as a nutrition consultant to area wellness programs. She comes from a large family who all worked in Kansas industries involving Native American farming practices. Many worked at local universities, extension departments, and were significant caregivers to those around them.
These cultural practices, as well as a traditional Cherokee menu, will be shared at this luncheon program. Many of the stories, prayers, myths and herbal practices demonstrated the oneness of all humanity and echoes the patterns of Native American culture from Alaska to Brazil. Customs will be discussed, herbal preparations shared and one such custom -- Smudging: The Blessing of a Neighbor's Home -- will actually be demonstrated.
