Can you believe that it's been 10 years since we created this idea, to encourage healthier birth Outcomes in the Harambee Neighborhood in Milwaukee?
While serving for Public Allies Milwaukee back in 2014-2015, I was placed at United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County. My task as a Community Health Ambassador, was to find creative ways to promote healthier birth outcomes within zip codes like 53212, which at the time had the highest infant mortality rates within the city of Milwaukee.
Before that, I had this dream of saving a baby out of front load washing machine, following the unfortunate death of my own son Terrell, who only lived for 17 hours following complications with labor.
United Way, many elected officials (Milele A. Coggs, Wanda Montgomery, Lena Taylor) and a host of community leaders, gave me the tools I needed, to have be on platforms to speak for families like my own that promote healthier birth outcomes in Black and Brown communities across the world.
