About the event

A Surprising History of Common Garden Vegetables
Wolf Peaches, Poisoned Peas, and Madame Pompadour’s Underwear—common garden vegetables have intriguing and rich histories! Join the Milton Historical Society for an engaging discussion about the fascinating stories behind many of our favorites, among them the much-maligned tomato and potato, the (mostly) popular pumpkin, and Vermont’s dynamic duo of kale and Gilfeather turnip. Find out why a lot of us don’t like beets, how a 17th-century pirate named the bell pepper, how carrots won the Trojan War, and how George Washington was nearly assassinated with a plate of poisoned peas. Free, open to all ages, and refreshments will be available!

Presenter: Rebecca Rupp, Science and history writer
Date: Wed, Sept. 3
Time: 6:30 – 8pm
Location: Milton Grange Hall 135 River St Milton, VT
Free, open to all ages, and refreshments will be available!
Proudly hosted by the Milton Historical Society
