Spirit of the Vaudeville with Richard Stillman

The Spirit of Vaudeville is a lively celebration of the musical vaudevillians of the Jazz Age. The show opens with a singing, banjo-strumming, guitar-picking, tap-dancing rendition of the 1920s hit “The Charleston,” passed down from the legendary vaudeville string musician Roy Smeck, who appeared in Al Jolson’s groundbreaking film The Jazz Singer.

The audience will meet a cast of colorful characters—some drawn from actual vaudeville history, such as Roy Smeck, Ukulele Ike, Will Rogers, and Sir Harry Lauder, and others brought to life through imagination. Performances include a Russian Charleston on the tenor banjo by Igor Skavilovich, a tap-dancing hat trick by Moishe Fiedelspeiler and the All Star Klezmer Hot Shots, clog-dancing rope tricks and cowboy jokes by Will Rogers, an Irish jig, and even a routine featuring simultaneous tap dancing, harmonica playing, bone rattling, and juggling. The show culminates with a Scottish number by Sir Harry Lauder, complete with bagpipes and the Scottish Charleston.

While full of humor, energy, and spectacle, The Spirit of Vaudeville also offers poignant moments that highlight the heart of the era. Audience members will leave with spirits lifted, having been touched by the magic of vaudeville.
