Anyone who comes to my classes knows that I’ll always cue a bit of fancy foot work. Feet are super important in yoga and in life! They are our foundation & our connection to mother-earth. Plugging into earth power and forming a good foundation means a beautifully balanced, light home right? Paying attention to our feet is helpful because:
1. Balance & Stability
All standing postures rely on the feet for balance. Even what you do with your feet in seated asana affects the integrity of the posture!
2. Alignment
When your feet are properly aligned, it helps the knees, hips, and spine align too. Misaligned feet can throw off your whole posture, leading to discomfort or even injury over time.
3. Engagement & Strength
By activating the feet we activate muscles throughout the legs & core which builds strength and awareness.
4. Energy Flow (Prana)
In yogic philosophy, the feet are channels for energy. They connect us to the earth and help ground the body. Activating the feet can enhance the flow of prana (life energy) through the whole body.
5. Mindfulness
Feet are packed with nerve endings, making them super responsive. Paying attention to how your feet move and feel during practice pulls you into the present moment, which is at the heart of yoga.
