“Art is uniquely positioned to make complex issues understandable and difficult truths palatable. Artists put a mirror to society, revealing the world around us through a creative lens. In the fight against climate breakdown (a term that suggests the climate has surpassed change and is now facing potentially irreparable damage), art and artists can be catalysts for action.” – Annabel Keenan
Join Climate Action Middlesbrough for the opening of our new exhibition called Our Place in the Family of Things, which is being held at the Dorman Museum in Middlesbrough. It opens on Thursday 26 June from 6-8pm.
The exhibition looks at our relationship to the natural world, climate change, nature, climate action, ecology and care and will show work by local, national and international artists who have never shown in Middlesbrough before, with many works being made especially for the exhibition.
The show will also display work from the Dorman Museum’s collection. Alongside this will be new work from some of the groups that Climate Action Middlesbrough have been working with - children and young people, schools, community groups and residential homes - Community Ventures, Tai Hua Court, Whinney Banks School, Abingdon Primary School, Hope Foundation, South Tees Youth Justice Service, Camphill Village Trust (Larchfield Community), and Teesside University.
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our time, and every action—big or small—can make a difference. With that in mind, the exhibition has been sustainably built using biodegradable and recyclable materials.
Running alongside the exhibition will be free weekly workshops with writers, artists, archaeologists and musicians.
