Brecon Mountain Railway Celebrates 45 Years of Steam
This summer marks a major milestone for the Brecon Mountain Railway as we celebrate 45 years since our first passenger train ran on 8th June 1980. It was on that day our founder, Tony Hills, brought his vision to life by operating the very first service—laying the tracks for decades of heritage steam on the Brecon Beacons.
To commemorate this special anniversary, we’re hosting a two-day celebration on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th June 2025—and you’re invited to join the festivities!
For the first time ever, we’ll be double-heading passenger trains with both of our Baldwin steam locomotives, offering a truly unforgettable sight and sound as they work together up the line. Adding to the excitement, we’ll also be joined by a special guest locomotive from the Vale of Rheidol Railway—the charming quarry Hunslet ‘Margaret’, which will be in steam and available for yard driving experiences.
Visitors can also enjoy:
• Workshop tours showcasing progress on our new-build Forney locomotive
• A chance to see our TU7 diesel loco up close
• The return of ‘Pendyffryn’, the De Winton vertical boiler loco that Tony Hills himself restored, making a welcome homecoming to Merthyr.
Train tickets are available now with no premium pricing, and further details on driving experiences and other special activities will be announced soon.
Don’t miss this unique celebration of steam heritage. Book your tickets today at www.bmr.wales – it promises to be a fantastic weekend for enthusiasts, families, and anyone who loves the magic of railways.
