Mississippi artist Brejenn Allen leads a two-day painting workshop at The MAX inspired by the book and exhibit, Thank You Please Come Again: How Gas Stations Feed & Fuel the American South by Kate Medley. In this workshop, participants learn to create 3D paintings based on Medley’s photographs using heavy-body acrylics and an expressive impasto technique.
The session on Saturday, May 10 begins with a group tour of the exhibit, followed by a step-by-step, hands-on studio experience where Brejenn guides attendees through 3D painting.
Between sessions, participants are encouraged to hit the road and photograph a favorite gas station in their own community, drawing inspiration from Medley’s documentary style.
Then, on May 31, Brejenn will guide the group through turning their personal photos into richly textured, 3D paintings that celebrate the everyday beauty of their southern communities.
This two-day workshop blends storytelling, exploration, and creativity, offering a unique opportunity to turn Southern roadside culture into lasting works of art.
MAX members may remember Brejenn Allen, an award-winning painter, teaching artist, and graduate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, who previously led a sold-out workshop creating paintings of the iconic Red Hot Truck Stop sign.
Materials provided. Open to all skill levels, ages 16+. Limited to 15 participants. Must attend both sessions.
