About the Mass Deportations:
On June 14, 1941, the Soviet Union began the mass deportation in the Baltic States of the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian population to Siberia, as well as present day western Belarus and western Ukraine, and present-day Moldova.
Approximately 23,000 people were deported, with the majority sent into exile and others to Gulag camps. Among those deported were many politicians, political prisoners, and public figures of the time, including Aleksandras Stulginskis, the second President of the Republic of Lithuania. In total, the USSR deported approximately 130,000 Lithuanians to Siberia.
