Jean Racine is acknowledged greatest of French tragedians. His plays of Greek Mythology-inspired tragedy manage to evoke the terror of tragedy while obeying the three unities of good theatre: unity of time, unity of place, and unity of action. These are the unities Shakespeare proudly flaunted, but how do these strictures work in the hands of a French master like Racine?
The tale is about Hippolytus, the son of Theseus, and Phedre, the wife of Theseus and Hippolytus' step-mother. Phedre is struck by a deep, forbidden love towards Hippolytus, and the results will be the end of them all.
