This July, Curwens Solicitors Gallery and Libellule are bringing a vibrant burst of creativity to Royston with a thought-provoking exhibition by artist Phyllis Dunseth Hart. A multidisciplinary artist whose work spans glass, painting, digital installations, and sculpture, Phyllis brings a unique and deeply reflective body of work to the local scene.
About the Artist
Phyllis trained in Fine Art at Newcastle University during the 1960s, specialising in stained glass design and painting. Her passion for glass continued, leading her to complete a course in Architectural Glass at Central Saint Martins in London. Over the decades, she has remained at the forefront of evolving glass technologies while simultaneously developing her work as a painter and installation artist.
Her creative journey has consistently explored both humorous and serious themes, often challenging viewers to look beyond surface representation. The works on display at Curwens Gallery—including pieces on the walls, windows, and a digital screen—demonstrate the wide-ranging and experimental nature of her practice. These include reflections on topics such as the refugee crisis, human fulfillment, and the very purpose of existence.
In 2003, Phyllis earned an MA in Fine Art, further refining her satirical and three-dimensional work. She has since exhibited widely in Leicester, Cambridge, Holyhead, the Western Isles, and locally in Melbourn and Meldreth. Internationally, a glass installation of hers is on permanent display in Minneapolis. Following her participation in the Chelsea International Competition in New York, Phyllis was invited to hold a solo exhibition at Artifact Gallery in NYC.
Phyllis’s artistic approach embraces risk, often resulting in compositions that are visually striking and emotionally resonant. She continues to develop her personal visual language and remains committed to tackling challenging subjects through her art.
She is also the author of The Little Book of Big Issues, available on Amazon, and during the lockdown period she explored pairing visual works with poetry.
Prints of most works in the exhibition are available for purchase, with 50% of proceeds donated to either Mercy Ships (floating hospitals) or Gaza humanitarian aid—buyers may specify their preferred cause at the point of purchase.
