This class is a crash course in poster design, both for movies and music. We will be exploring the history of movie poster design, usage of cinematic visual language in illustration, and sketch process. We will also explore type design and layout, from simple to decorative.
Take your first steps in a structured creative process to illustrate and design posters. You’ll learn several different approaches, methods, and the philosophy of poster art.
Participants will learn several different processes and tools:
- Immersion to ideation
- Thumbnailing
- Conceptual thinking using symbolism and visual metaphor
- Type design and layout
- Composition
- Professional process and rates
The workshop will focus mostly on ideation and composition. Participants will make dozens of thumbnail sketches and develop several of the sketches to roughs in full greyscale value. At the end of the workshop, you will leave feeling confident exploring poster design in whatever style or artistic voice that empowers you!
NOTE: This is meant for any skill and experience level. The focus is less on producing finished art than exploring a wide range of approaches and learning the historical context and process of poster design.
