Join a Ranger for a Nature Hike!
Spend a few hours in the woods with park Natural Resources Program Manager, Brent Steury. He is offering 6 different hikes at the following dates and locations along the Parkway:
August 11, 9am at Great Falls Visitor Center Courtyard
August 19, 9am at Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve
September 15, 9am at Turkey Run Park, C-1 parking lot/trail head
September 16, 9am at Theodore Roosevelt Island
October 6, 9am at Great Falls Visitor Center Courtyard
October 21, 9am at Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve
*All hikes will be 1.5-2 hrs of slow, moderate hiking (Turkey Run will have steep stairs to climb & descend).
*Hikes at Great Falls Park require payment of regular entrance fee.
Brent is the author of 56 publications concerning the natural history of the George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP). Brent has authored the flora of Great Falls Park and published papers on turtles, frogs, snails, moths, grasshoppers, crickets, katydids, bees, and beetles, including descriptions of 5 beetle species new to science found in GWMP.
Over the last 20 years Brent has work with a myriad of other scientists conducting research in the park on topics ranging from bats to sawflies. A species of shore fly discovered by one of these researchers is known in the world only from Clay Pond in Great Falls Park.
Brent will bring copies of some of his most loved papers to pass out to the first participants to request a copy.
