About the event

Emancipation Day in Nodaway County
Join us for a program about the Emancipation Day celebrations in Nodaway County. This event was held by African Americans in recognition of the ending of slavery, most notably the abolition of slavery in the British Empire in 1834. Prior to the ending of slavery across the United States, these dates in August were celebrated as opposed to the Fourth of July, which represented only partial freedom for African Americans. Historian Elyssa Ford, Ph.D., will discuss the origins of Emancipation Day and will trace its place within Nodaway County. This program is free and open to the public.
