Crankie-Making Workshop with Primrose Coke

Join us for a daylong, hands-on workshop with multi-media artist Primrose Coke as we dive into the fascinating world of Crankies—a centuries-old storytelling tradition experiencing a vibrant revival!

A Crankie is essentially a moving panorama: a long illustrated scroll wound onto two spools, set inside a box with a viewing window. As the scroll is hand-cranked, a story unfolds—accompanied by spoken word, song, or music.

In this workshop, Primrose Coke will guide participants through:

The History of Crankies – From their 18th-century European origins to their resurgence in modern storytelling.

Hands-On Crankie Making – Learn to design, illustrate, and assemble your own scrolling story.

Performance & Storytelling Techniques – Explore ways to bring your Crankie to life with narrative, music, or movement.

Whether you’re an artist, musician, storyteller, or just curious about this mesmerizing art form, this workshop is your chance to create and connect with a timeless tradition.
