Overview
The field trip will include a guided nature walk led by the reserve director, Joe Miller, and our very own Conservation Affairs Chair, David Kisner. A major goal of the visit is to collectively document at least 30 species (flora and fauna) on iNaturalist, contributing to citizen science efforts and symbolically supporting the 30x30 conservation goal. Participants of all experience levels are encouraged to join; no prior knowledge of species identification is required to take part in the iNaturalist activity.
Safety and Accessibility
Please note that safety hazards such as poison oak, ticks, and rattlesnakes may be encountered. This field trip will involve walking on unpaved surfaces and trails, which may include uneven terrain, inclines, and/or other physical challenges. While we are happy to discuss and explore reasonable accommodations for individuals with mobility constraints, please note that due to the nature of the environment, not all accommodations may be feasible. We encourage participants with specific needs to contact us in advance so we can assess options and provide guidance.
About the Reserve
The UC Santa Cruz Fort Ord Natural Reserve, part of the University of California Reserve System, spans more than 600 acres of former military land that now serves as a critical refuge for native species and ecosystems. Managed by UCSC, the reserve features diverse habitats such as maritime chaparral, coastal grasslands, oakwoodlands, and seasonal wetlands. These environments support a variety of sensitive and rare species. The reserve also functions as a hub for field-based education, ecological research, and habitat restoration.
What to Bring
Attendees should bring water, snacks, sun protection, sturdy walking shoes, binoculars, and a smartphone or camera to participate in biodiversity documentation. Layers are recommended due to variable coastal weather.
We hope to see you there!
