Our May presentation is "Marietta National Cemetery – Walking Through World War II," presented by Loren Plisco. This event will be May 27 at 7 PM inside the First Presbyterian Church (189 Church Street, Marietta, GA 30060).
Description: In 1994, Cobb County Genealogical Society published Cobb County, Georgia Cemeteries, Volume III, Marietta National Cemetery. Loren Plisco is a volunteer for Stories Behind the Stars (SBTS), a non-profit organization organized to collect the stories of each of the 420,000+ Americans who were killed during World War II. Based on his research, he has identified about 360 WWII fallen heroes interred or memorialized in the Marietta National Cemetery (MNC). As of 1 April 2025, about 28 percent of the WWII fallen in MNC have had a story completed by SBTS volunteers (102 stories/362 WWII fallen). In this presentation, Loren will use the stories of some of those WWII fallen to walk through some of the major headline events of World War II, and discuss examples of the genealogical records and sources that help tell these stories.
Speaker: Loren Plisco is an amateur genealogist, who has been working on his family tree for over 35 years. Loren has a Bachelor of Science degree in Systems Engineering from the United States Naval Academy and a Master of Science degree in Technical Management from Johns Hopkins University. He served on submarines in the US Navy, worked as engineer and manager for the federal government, and operated a small consulting company – and is now fully retired. He is a member of the Cobb County Genealogical Society, Ritchie County (WV) Historical Society, and Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society. He is also a volunteer for Stories Behind the Stars, an organization writing stories about each of the 420,000+ fallen heroes in World War II.
