Why do contractors need to know how to sell?


Does this yoyo remind you of your sales numbers? Up, down, walk the dog and staying down for a while before coming back up again, maybe? What would it be like if your sales became reliable and consistently grew every year? More like riding a ski lift up a mountain. Would you be able to bring home more money? Would it be easier to grow your business? Would you carry a lot less stress? What would it look like if you increased your sales just 20% but every year?

Most businesses don’t accomplish this because it requires several different parts working at peak performance, with each part improving the performance of the others..and they didn’t teach us how to do this in school, did they? Well, I can tell you how I learned it. I’ve put in over 18 years in sales with over 10 years of sales leadership working for contractors, service providers and manufacturers. After achieving a top five ranking nationally for three years in a row, the business I worked for saw that I had figured out the complex problem of generating consistently high sales. That’s when I started building high performance sales programs so others could benefit from my experience.

What does it look like? Well it looks like the difference between option 1; coming home exhausted then figuring out what’s for dinner. Have you ever been in this situation? How does it feel? For me it’s stressful and normally results in me finding the easiest option which normally isn’t very healthy as it’s just something I can open a box and toss in the microwave or get delivered from a fast-food joint. Don’t get me wrong, I love French fries but I definitely don’t feel my best after eating them and I don’t feel great about how I am taking care of myself.

Now how does this compare to option 2; you want to have a BBQ on Saturday so you plan the menu on Thursday, buy the ingredients you need on Friday and simply cook what you planned to cook. You know what you are making, you have the right ingredients ready and you have the recipes so you can just follow the directions. On Saturday you cook a great meal and you feel proud of what you have done. The bottom line is that all of your energy went into executing a known plan with a known goal and that made it easy to achieve a high level of success.

I’m not just trying to make you hungry, but can you see how this relates to your sales? Has your sales team ever started their day without a plan in place? Without specific goals? Do they exhaust themselves just trying to figure out what they will do then end up just doing whatever is easiest, so they feel like they got something done? Do they feel great about what they accomplished? Are they heading into the next day feeling energized and confident or is it hard for them to head right back into that same situation again and again?
