Talk & Try It with Non-sighted Artist Richard Berkholtz

This Talk & Try It will give attendees of all ages a glimpse into the life and art practice of Richard Berkholtz, a local ceramicist and small business owner who lost his sight in 2015.

Since 2015, Richard has stayed creatively active by making art and starting his own business. Using adaptive equipment and techniques, Richard has developed a ceramic art practice and started his own firestarter business. He uses adaptive equipment and techniques to make handcrafted firestarters and ceramics alike. Richard's ceramic studio practice explores all that clay has to offer, but he specializes in vessels of all kinds, masks, and sculptural vessels. Over the years he has become a master of his process by using his hands as his eyes. He incorperates texture into his ceramic work and continues to investigate ways to add tactile design elements. Richard works with ArtWorking, a Madison area nonprofit that provides career development and support for artists and entrepreneurs with disabilities.

Participants at Richard's Talk & Try It will have the unique opportunity to hear directly from Richard Berkholtz about what it's like to navigate the world without sight. Participants will also get to have a hands-on chance to practice manipulating clay using Richard's own techniques - with the option to do so with their eyes closed. He loves to make art with others and share his techniques.

Children are warmly invited to attend this Talk & Try It with parents/guardians. Every person in attendance must be registered. Pizza and ice cream will be served free of charge. We hope to see you there!
