Faun Fables have been trailblazers of avant-folk/original music since the turn of the century; known for exquisite, visceral songs and live shows, and the occasional theater piece. Their work became internationally widespread by 2004 with the Drag City Records debut “Family Album.” The group has seasonally toured grass roots, night club, theater and festival circuits in the USA, Europe, UK, Israel, and Oceania.
Their new album “Counterclockwise” marks their eighth album with the label, officially released May 2025. The songs and production offer the most encompassing, richly lived-in sonic world of all their releases. Their timeless “songtelling” practice is entwined with a holistic view of a life in music - celebrating the mundane details of home and family, elevated by a mystical and fantastical perspective. See/hear the first single, Ember Bell.
Dawn McCarthy’s voice (which The New Yorker described as “one of the more compelling instruments in contemporary music") opens hearts and minds from a whisper to a rallying battle cry into her mythical world, animated by the adventurous musicality and vocals of partner Nils Frykdahl (Sleepytime Gorilla Museum). Their daughters, growing up alongside the writing, recording, and touring since they were babies, now join them with additional vocals, flute, keyboard, bass, and percussion. The first leg of live shows in the States this summer will feature the elemental guitar work of Norwegian musician Arild Hammerø; who can be heard on Ember Bell and other tracks of “Counterclockwise.” Faun Fables are currently based in Nevada County, California.
H.R. Britton is a storyteller, actor, educator, and musician who counts Madison as his home town (and he’s just returned after nearly 20 year away). He creates full-length solo storytelling shows which often involve live music, and which he has toured around North America (Nikolai Gogol’s “The Nose,” “Melting in Madras,” “Jesus Rant,” and “The Kafka Thesis”). Recently he performed with Amy Salloway in her monologue-plus-one-actor, “Entwined” in the Minnesota Fringe. In Boston, he worked for many years with the storytelling organization MassMouth to produce and promote story slams and storytelling workshops in Eastern Massachusetts. He loves curating and hosting monthly spoken word variety shows, such as “Stories to Scenes,” which featured a comedy improv troupe in Boston, and “Lower East Side Stories in NYC. In film he’s had small-but-punchy roles in Ronald Bronstein’s “Frownland” and Max Weissberg’s “Room 4 Rent” and “Summertime in New York.” This fall he collaborated in the Are We Delicious production of “The Bacchae.” In the 90’s he co-founded and co-led Madison’s eclectic and surrealist folk-rock troupe The Blissters.
