Card-Making and Letter-Writing Workshop

Join Artist and justice advocate Katie Calvert for a creative event where you will be able to create 3 or more handmade cards that you can mail to your legislators about an issue that you care about. Katie was originally inspired by her passion for speaking out for the vulnerable, particularly now for "the 26,000 children who lost legal representation last month. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services terminated paying for lawyers when those children go to immigration court."

Katie describes her own experience of using artwork to help her "see beauty rise out of injustice." She created artwork using the butterfly as a metaphor for the vulnerability of children to sex trafficking, and she "sees this as a very real and scary possibility for these lawyerless children now."

Katie decided to facilitate this card making/letter writing event for those who would be interested in using art supplies to make cards and letters to communicate via snail mail with their legislative representatives, specifically in regard to their support of the Fair Day in Court for Kids Act (S. 1297) sponsored by Senator Hirono. This project was also inspired by remembering that during the Civil Rights Movement, activists made use of mailing physical letters to their representatives in order to flood the system, and create processing friction. We can do that again!
