About the event

Te Whakaraupō, a place we call home - Exhibition
Opening event: Saturday 2 August 2-4pm
Exhibition runs: 1-24 August

Stoddart Cottage Gallery presents Te Whakaraupō, a place we call home, an exhibition featuring work by mother, Angela Boer and daughter, Paula Arbouw. The exhibition is inspired by their experiences living in Te Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour. It includes a range of 2D and 3D works, such as landscape paintings in oil, acrylic, and watercolour, as well as ceramic objects and ceramic jewellery. The artworks reflect natural forms, patterns, textures, movements, colours, lights, and moods found in the harbour.

Angela Boer has a background as a Fine Arts teacher in The Netherlands and New Zealand, and completed a post-graduate diploma in Arts Therapy in 2018. She values the role art plays in people's lives, for both the artist and the viewer. Her artistic practice includes ceramic objects, stone sculptures, and more recently, pastel drawings and acrylic paintings. Her artworks reflect her connection with the natural world, appearing as colourful paintings and objects.

Paula Arbouw has been creating art for over 20 years. She completed a silversmithing apprenticeship and studied design. Her paintings, in oil and watercolour, are inspired by New Zealand's landscapes, capturing different seasons, moods, and lighting. Her interest in ceramic jewellery began from a personal liking for earrings and a pair she acquired while travelling. She and Angela spent almost two years developing their ceramic jewellery, leading to the creation of Kiln Jewellery. This exhibition presents their combined work and their connection to Te Whakaraupō.
