Stoddart Cottage Gallery November Exhibition

Stoddart Cottage Gallery presents Internal Spaces. An exhibition by ÅŒtautahi based, multidisciplinary artist, Kara Burrowes.

Working primarily with paint, Burrowes incorporates found materials, textiles, photography and drawing to create works that carry a distinctly sculptural quality. Weaving together personal narratives, peripheral observations and fleeting memories, Burrowes’ work explores themes of hiraeth, longing, identity and the transience of time through gestures of scratching, smearing, pouring, staining, stitching and scribbling. Drawn to what is often discarded or overlooked, Burrowes reimagines these materials through processes of reinvention and transformation. Often working in groupings or pairings, repetition and accumulation her practice is guided by intuition and material response. Burrowes reworks and reframes materials to reveal beauty and meaning in unexpected places. Burrowes process can involve a sense of unrestrained urgency only to then to be obscured, veiled, or erased, leaving behind a quiet record of truth and history. With a background in art, design, and landscape architecture, Burrowes has an affinity for the three-dimensional. This perspective informs the spatial and tactile sensibility of her work, reflecting an awareness of our position as small, yet significant, within the larger continuum of place and time.

The exhibition opens on Saturday the 8th of November at 4pm. Gallery hours are Friday-Sunday 10am-4pm. Nau mai, haere mai.
