Rural Remix: Kes and Animation Workshop (PG) at Ludlow Assembly Rooms

Shropshire Independent Cinema is a partnership founded in 2025 to curate fun and inspiring film-led events for our local communities and culturally curious visitors. Ludlow Assembly Rooms, Old Market Hall, Wem Town Hall and Wellington Orbit work with each other, local artists, young people and our partners to hand-pick films and events that express the historically independent spirit of our region. The Rural Remix, 11-13 July, is our first joint creation, showcasing our take on rural life and landscape on screen.

Ken Loach’s powerful and poignant British classic follows Billy Casper, a working-class boy growing up in 1960s Yorkshire, whose bleak life at home and school is transformed when he discovers a passion for falconry. As Billy trains a wild kestrel he names Kes, he finds a rare sense of freedom, purpose, and connection amid a system that seems determined to crush his spirit. With raw performances, authentic casting, and a naturalistic style inspired by Italian neo-realism, Kes is a deeply moving exploration of childhood, class, and resilience—widely regarded as one of the most important British films ever made.
