**June Special Election**
"I've heard about home rule but it seems confusing. What is it and what does it mean for me?"
Join us to learn more about the Douglas County Commissioner driven Home Rule Special Election starting in less than two weeks and just 2 months after they passed their initiative with no public comment or input before and none since.
It is the largest change to the Douglas County government in Douglas County’s history. It starts with a $500,000 special election that has no campaign finance law protections for residents.
Our presenters, Former Commissioner of eight years Lora Thomas (R) and Community Organizer Angela Thomas (D) are opposed to County Home Rule and will explain why. Lora will share her first-hand knowledge of state and county processes and laws that make Home Rule unwarranted. Angela will explain what Home Rule is and the potential long term negative impacts to our finances and democratic processes.
If Home Rule passes, the Commissioners’ timeline gives just 2 months - July and August - for 24 elected, volunteer Charter Commissioners to rewrite the entire Douglas County government in a new Charter. This Charter covers every aspect of Douglas County government – the number of commissioners, term limits, salaries, land decrees and properties for schools, budgets, how taxes are managed, county elections, public input processes, checks and balances and much, much more. The Charter is permanent, cannot be voted out and may be difficult or impossible to amend.
We hope you can join us to learn about the Commissioner’s Home Rule initiative and why we suggest you Vote No on Home Rule.
