Understanding Social Issues: Community, Civic Life, and Change

Social issues impact all of us-but who decides what counts as a social problem? And how do individuals and communities create meaningful change? This engaging four-session course, led by Ainsley Lambert-Swain, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Sociology at Bellarmine University, invites participants of all backgrounds to explore how social problems are defined, framed, and addressed.

Through interactive discussions and hands-on activities, participants will examine how public conversations are shaped by media, experts, and grassroots efforts. Dr. Lambert-Swain will guide us as we explore how civic engagement-whether through voting, advocacy, or community organizing-plays a role in shaping policies and solutions.

This course provides a welcoming space for open dialogue, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving, with Dr. Lambert-Swain fostering a supportive environment for all. No prior knowledge is needed-just an interest in understanding social issues and how change happens.
