Join Us for a Special Evening about Calke Abbey!
We are excited to announce that June’s demonstration evening will feature a unique and very insightful talk by Stephen Hartley, a dedicated National Trust House Conservation Volunteer. Stephen will delve into the fascinating world of the paintings, artworks and artists showcased at Calke Abbey, located in the picturesque village of Ticknall, Derbyshire.
With years of volunteering experience at Calke Abbey, Stephen possesses a wealth of knowledge and hands on experience about the impressive collection of artworks, the artists behind them, and the vital conservation efforts that preserve these treasures for future generations; he even gets to see the ones that aren't out on view too.
Calke Abbey, a Grade I listed country house, was established during the Tudor period by Sir Henry Harpur 1st Baronet and has served as the family residence for nearly 400 years. In 1985, the house was entrusted to the National Trust in lieu of death duties and is celebrated as “a unique country house in decline.” Visitors can explore its rich history and stunning architecture, all set within a large enclosed park.
The Harpur Crewe family were passionate about art and their collection features notable artists such as William Henry Davis, Marmaduke Cradock, Joseph Van Aken, John Ferneley, and John Closterman. These works of art not only captivate the eye but also offer a glimpse into the cultural heritage of the United Kingdom.
This is a must for art lovers and everyone is welcome, no booking is necessary!
Don’t miss this opportunity to enrich your understanding of the art and history at Calke Abbey. We look forward to seeing you there!
